Xbox Tavern’s One to Watch: February 2025

Well, 2025 isn’t messing about, huh? After a quieter January we’re now being bombarded with no less than 3 huge RPG’s one after the other. Granted, they are all aiming for different types of fans in the genre and settings chosen, but man, where do we find the time?? Anyway, let’s look at the games out this month that we think are worth paying close attention too.

Feb 18th:
Avowed – Obsidian Entertainment

Xbox’s big push into the year begins with the highly anticipated Avowed. Initial impressions from trailers were mixed but more recently certain outlets got hands on with the game and there were very few who weren’t massively impressed with what they played. Obsidian have some serious pedigree in the genre having tackled sci-fi in The Outer Worlds and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, but now they’re head on with the mighty Skyrim in the fantasy space. Will the wait have been worth it? We’ll find out in just a few weeks.

Feb 11th
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II – Warhorse Studios

The original Kindgom Come: Deliverance was a huge success back in 2018, relying on it’s portrayal of a more realistic medievil setting and brutal themes and story. This sequel has been highly anticipated since, and the small preview we had chance to check out last year certainly did its job in getting us excited to play. Being the first of the huge RPG’s to be released in February might give it a leg up, but hopefully it will back up the advantage with a fantastic gameplay experience.

Feb 21st
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii – RGG Studio

Just how do RGG keep doing this? Almost yearly releases in the Like a Dragon series that maintain the quality while making the best re-use of assets and adding in a plethora of new and engaging stuff too? It’s a modern wonder and something we hope continues with their recently revealed titles at the game awards (that are in development in conjunction with what feels like a thousand other games). This title lays the slapstick on thick with Goro Majima waking up on an island with amnesia and transforming into a pirate legend – what else could we have expected. Tavern stalwart Gray is very excited for this one, and we can’t blame him. And if nothing else, fucking Samoa Joe is in there which means we’re in for a good time.

Feb 28th
Monster Hunter Wilds – Capcom

Jesus Christ – we said no less than three massive RPG’s, and we’d completely forgotten about Monster Hunter Wilds… The ever-popular series is back with a huge entry that looks to take the series to the next level in terms of scope and grandeur. I’ve never been able to get into the series personally, but after Dragon’s Dogma II utterly blew me away last year, I’m keen to see if Wilds can do the same for me. And if nothing else, smacking about some huge creatures surely has to be a fun evening or three with friends.

Feb 18th
Lost Records: Bloom & Rage Tape 1 – Don’t Nod

I love a good interactive story game, and this is largely in part to the original Life is Strange. The more relaxed gameplay paired with tough choices that affect the story really captivates me, and so Don’t Nod coming back with a new take on the genre after parting ways with the LiS series is an instant ‘yes please’ from me. Set in the ’90s and revolving around a group of teens setting up a band (and the inevitable magical twist that Don’t Nod are so good at) is exactly the premise that appeals to me, and I can’t wait to see this first part fairs before Tape 2 is released one month later.

I've been gaming since Spy vs Spy on the Master System, growing up as a Sega kid before realising the joy of multi-platform gaming. These days I can mostly be found on smaller indie titles, the occasional big RPG and doing poorly at Rainbow Six: Siege. Gamertag: Enaksan
