I didn’t know I was craving a space shooter until I started playing Void Gore. This has scratched an itch I didn’t think I needed or wanted. Void Gore mixes classic styled visuals and roguelike features with the classic enjoyable space shooter gameplay from arcades in the 90’s.
Void Gore is simple to control – just one button to shoot and another to drop area of effect bombs, the effect of which is denoted by the circle around your ship. Each run sees you collecting coins which are used to by upgrades (such as faster fire rate, stronger bullets etc.) for the ship that remain across runs thankfully, and so I was able to get that bit further each time thanks to being that bit stronger. I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this set-up to begin with but the more I played, the more I wanted to power up and get further through the levels of Hell.
Achievements are pretty nicely implemented too – one sees you need to kill 500 enemies, but this is tracked across runs so you don’t need to grind in one sitting to unlock it!
Conclusion
Void Gore has scratched an itch I didn’t know I had. The classic shooter gameplay works well with the rogue-like elements, and the upgrades give each run a fresh feel. If you’re fond of old school shmups then definitely check out Void Gore.
