Lego Voyagers Review

In the vein of titles like It Takes Two, or Split Fiction, Lego Voyagers is a two-player only affair, requiring either a local or online buddy to play (thankfully, there’s a buddy pass system online so only one player has to own the game, which is excellent). While this could be a restriction in being able to easily play the game (it’s taken me longer because we just couldn’t find time to get together), what we have here is an enjoyably simple affair that is equal parts fun to play and gorgeous to look at.

Taking on the role of either the red or blue Lego block, the aim is simply to move through the stages by rolling around, building simple contraptions to cross gaps, and solving puzzles to get to the end. There’s nothing super taxing here, but then again the chill vibe of the game as a whole fits that idea perfectly; this isn’t one to rage quit over because your partner is missing a vital action, rather it’s a game that encourages players to help each other even when it goes wrong.

I’ve played in equal parts with my ten year old daughter and my non-gamer wife, and both enjoyed it for different reasons. The former for its cute aesthetic and simple building, the latter for the slightly more challenging latter areas and exploring the limits of what we could do to bypass an area. The puzzles all have straightforward solutions, but getting to these can prove testing of our skills to work together, such as piloting a boat and trying to align our thrust to move forward at the same time, or building a tall tower to help one of us up before the other can act as a grapple point of sorts.

The game is viewed from an isometric point with no camera control given to the player, and we must remain on the same screen at all times, forcing us to work together without one or the other wandering off. This can make some of the platforming parts a little tricky to navigate as it’s not always easy to see the angle of a ledge. Or more annoyingly, the controls are based on camera positioning, so if the other player is moving about while we’re trying to do fine movements it can throw us off. But on the whole, this single screen aspect works well at keeping the team focussed in one area and letting us figure out the puzzle and solution without too much distraction.

Lego Voyagers is also a gorgeous game to look at. Lego games have nailed that plasticky look by now, but here everything has an extra sheen on it that makes it really pop off of the screen. It’s like looking at a tilt-shifted diorama of a Lego scene, and the high quality reflections and details really do have a dream-like quality to them.

Conclusion

Lego Voyagers is equal parts lovely to look at, simple yet engaging to play, and an all round good time for co-op players no matter their skill level.

I've been gaming since Spy vs Spy on the Master System, growing up as a Sega kid before realising the joy of multi-platform gaming. These days I can mostly be found on smaller indie titles, the occasional big RPG and doing poorly at Rainbow Six: Siege. Gamertag: Enaksan
